Rant incoming... and a solution 🤬

We've helped over 4.5k freelancers since we joined forces in 2019, and still no one believes us when we say

Passive income does NOT exist!

But it is totally possible to make sales when you're not expecting to.

So buckle up, my friend... this email is a little lesson to help you make more moolah in 2026!

If you thought I was gonna go off on a rant about passive income, you were right - but I deleted the rant before sending this coz it was LOOOOOONG.

How to get sales when you're not expecting them.

The thing is... those “surprise” sales are almost never random.

They happen when someone takes a tiny action, triggering a tiny automation behind the scenes that says.

“If they do this, send them that.”

So here’s the easiest way to think about it…

Step 1: Pick ONE thing you want to sell

A power hour, a mini service, a workshop, a template — whatever you want more sales of.

(For the love of your own sanity, only pick one, or this quickly becomes overwhelming!)

Step 2: Work backwards

Ask yourself:
“What tiny actions would someone take before buying this?”

Maybe they would:

  • Download a specific lead magnet
  • Click a link in an email
  • Reply to your story
  • Comment on a post
  • Buy something else

Step 3: Let a tiny system do the hard work while you relax and catch up on Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives (just us?)

We're not talking giant funnels or 27-email sequences.

It could be as simple as sending one email with more help related to the thing they engaged with and adding a PS about the thing you’re selling.

Later on, you might add 2–5 more emails, spread out a day or so apart — all gently nudging them towards the offer.

It can look something as simple as this:

As soon as someone buys, they stop hearing about it 🪄

But here’s the part people ALWAYS forget:

These lovely (so-called passive) systems only work if people are actually taking the Step 2 actions... which leads me nicely on to:

Step 4: Use your marketing to point people towards taking those tiny actions

Giving them the link to click, the blog to read, the lead magnet to download, and the thing that shows your automation, they could be the perfect person to buy your offer.

And so, no... It's NOT passive income.

But it’s definitely easier than pushing sales content every day and hoping for the best.

And that's why we think ALL freelance SMMs should be thinking about setting up tiny systems like this in 2026... and we'll be here to help you do it 👏

When I was 10 years old, I wrote to my local newspaper. They had this deal where they'd give out free ice cream if you wrote in for your birthday. Only it wasn't MY birthday - it was my Dad's, and I thought he'd like a free ice cream. I told them he would be 36, and his favourite ice cream was mint chocolate chip (that's my favourite too). They must have been stuck for stories as the front page headline that week read, "COLIN MOORE IS 36" 😱 That week, our phone didn't stop ringing with people...

If showing up online feels a bit heavier than it used to, there’s a good reason for that. It’s not that you’ve lost confidence. And it’s definitely not that you’re suddenly bad at marketing. It's that AI has changed everything. We're hearing it over and over. And it hasn't just changed how content is created (although that's a biggie) It’s reduced people's trust levels... massively. Between deepfakes, confident opinions with zero experience behind them, and stats that sound impressive but are...

Does this sound familiar? You spend ages putting a price together for a client who promises you content only for it to never arrive So you: grab some stock images repurpose their old content spend far too long in Canva or ask chat GPT to come up with something All while thinking, “I really wish I’d charged more for this.” It’s THE most frustrating thing ever. But here’s the bit most people miss… The longer you keep creating content without the assets they agreed to provide, the less incentive...
